Before JRR Tolkien...
Maskull with Krag -- and the apparition
at the Seance...
Nightspore at Starkness Observatory
Published in 1920, David Lindsay's  first novel was far ahead of its time.  Popular science fiction had been confined mostly to the works of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells up until that point, oriented to visions of advanced technology. Lindsay's tale of strange Gods, death, rebirth and existential angst is credited by C.S. Lewis as a major influence on his and JRR Tolkien's work.

Little known to the fantasy community, a 35mm independent feature film was produced in 1970, based on Lindsay's story.   After the finished film was offered to a fledgling New Line Cinema and several other distributors in 1971, the film was distributed on 16mm (before the popular videotape formats) by Brandon Films as part of its underground cinema collection,  mostly to colleges, for several years.  Finally, the film has been dusted off, transferred to video and re-edited...
